Oyster bay: East Bay Regional Park District's nature interpreters lead a series of occasional Saturday and Sunday Strolls highlighting the natural and cultural history of various regional parks. They are great for families, and dogs are welcome on most strolls.
It's a chance for park visitors to take a free, self guided tour of about 1,000 feet of the park's restored 1930s era Hazel Atlas silica sand mine. Park staff will be posted along the way to point out interesting features. For safety reasons, it's restricted to ages 7 and older. However, there's an underground chamber just inside the mine entrance set aside for younger children, where they can enjoy interactive exhibits about the mining era.
And Black Diamond Mines' underground Greathouse Visitor Center is nearby. The visitor center is open to all ages. Inside are photos, mining memorabilia and a video overview of the park. Saturday for kids ages 7 and older, led by naturalist Bob Kanagaki. Bob will talk about common rocks found in the park, and how we use them every day.
The program is free. Meet Bob at the Greathouse Visitor Center. Nov. 30, Bob has scheduled a program for all ages featuring the various kinds of lighting used by miners through the years.
