and raised $5,000. This year, more than 50 bank employees participated, and raised upwards of $20,000."The contrast between where we started and now is reflective of what you can build if you devote the time and effort to it," he said. "What's really neat about this whole thing is that the employees rally themselves around the issue. It took little effort on my part to get people involved."Francie Newfield walked the route with her dog and her 10 member team from Santa Cruz County Human Services. While the cheerleaders chanted, "Hey, let's fire it up!" more than 130 sponsored teams and individuals participated in the 16th annual Memory Walk, which brought in close to $200,000. That money will go toward Alzheimer's research, as well as supporting local families living with the disease, according to Dale Thielges, Santa Cruz site director for the Alzheimer's Association. The Memory Walk began at Seascape Resort, passed through Seascape Park and wound down to the beach, where it continued along the coastline. The route then circled back and ended where it started, with lunch, awards and festivities.Marian Langdon and her team "Horizon," consisting of her neighbors Deborah Smith and Judy Zscheile, were the second highest fundraisers for the day, bringing in more than $6,000. Since July, each of the Aptos residents has contacted friends, church and business associates and family members, soliciting donations."We are a small team that has done very, very well," she said. "It's fantastic. We're the top non corporate team."Langdon's husband of more than 46 years, Glen, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2004. Glen Langdon is a Santa Cruz resident who now lives in assisted care in Redwood City, after a diligent search for the best possible facility."My husband was a UCSC professor after taking early retirement from IBM. He's written several books, has many patents, speaks two languages and, right at the moment, can hardly put two words together," she said.Langdon says that, for her, it's been a long learning process, but that she Fred Perry Polo Black And White is grateful to those who have rallied around her, including both of her neighbors."They approached me to see if I could be a team captain," she said. "These are lifelong friends."Jon Ditlevsen, senior vice president and regional manager for Comerica Bank in Santa Cruz, walked the route as part of a 50 member employee team, which he chairs. Ditlevsen has been a participant in all 16 Memory Walks dating back to 1993. In the mid 1990s, Ditlevsen's mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, followed closely by his father."I took care of my parents for about nine years," Ditlevsen said. "This walk is close to my heart."Ditlevsen remembers the first walk in 1993, where 10 employees at his bank participated Lacoste Women

members worked in the health care field, Newfield said. Newfield manages programs for the elderly and disabled and has also recently lost a family member, who died after 18 years of dementia.Newfield said that while dementia and Alzheimer's are devastating to individuals and their families, she still manages to find joy in her work."Oftentimes, people lose some of their other abilities and operate purely on an emotional connection," she said. "If you give them attention, quiet time and love, you get it back many times over. It's incredibly rewarding."Site director Dale Thielges said the Memory Walk is about getting the Alzheimer's Association's voice heard, which increases funding for research.
