During her final semester in college, recent University of Wisconsin Madison alumna Amanda Senkbeil used a combination of her coding knowledge, Google Maps and a third party app developer to create her own virtual reality game that takes place on her campus. By traveling to different physical locations and tracking down in game characters, players cross items off their senior bucket list until they finish the storyline and "graduate."

The traditionally slow moving higher education system is already responding to smartphones' exploding popularity with classes in mobile app development.
But other classes are more complex. At California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, computer science associate professor David Janzen published a series of online courses teaching advanced programming.
"It's very popular in the universities because students want it," Janzen said about courses teaching app development. "However a lot of faculty are reluctant to teach courses like this because they require a steep learning curve and it changes a lot. You can't just develop the class once and teach the same class for the next four years."
"Universities want to teach this because it's one of the fastest growing industries in the country," Ward said. "(App developers) are the builders. They're the people who craft the things we engage with on a daily basis."

"I had no experience doing any sort of coding before that class, and after it we were creating CSS style sheets and doing different dialogues and all the breaks with the characters," Senkbeil said. "And it was really cool to be able to do it. It was something I could bring back to my friends and say, 'Hey look, I made this.'"

Story HighlightsOne expert describes today developers as the "manufacturing class" of the 21st century
While it takes business and tech smarts to run app behemoths such as Angry Birds or Instagram, students every semester are cranking out smaller apps in classrooms and labs across the country. The requirements to begin learning are very low, Ward said; Senkbeil, a liberal arts student, took her spring 2013 class in mobile game programming as an elective.
Jake Ward, executive director of the Application Developers Alliance, described today's developers as the "manufacturing class" of the 21st century. Just as mechanics took apart lawnmowers as kids in the 1950s, Ward said, today's young developers spent their childhood tinkering with technology.
But the game wasn't the culmination of years of computer science classes it was just one class project in the growing world of mobile app programming courses at universities.

He began teaching Android app development in early 2010, just as Motorola Droid smartphones emerged as an alternative to the iPhone. In addition to teaching several mobile coding classes at Cal Poly, he also developed the online courses with a grant from Google to teach even more complex app design.
